The incidence and impact of HIV and AIDS is currently greatest in sub-Saharan Africa. AIDS is a global epidemic, however, and all regions are affected. These documents provide an overview of experiences in several regions of the developing world.

This book from the World Bank reviews the HIV/AIDS situation in the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Mediterranean region. It argues that greater investments in improved surveillance, prevention and care are needed now to maintain low prevalence levels and preserve the focus on national and regional development goals.

Why has West Africa so far avoided an HIV/AIDS epidemic on the scale of Eastern and Southern Africa? What are the links between and HIV/AIDS and governance? This paper from the African Civil Society Governance and AIDS Initiative (GAIN) provides an overview of the AIDS and governance situation in West Africa. Concentrating on Cameroon, Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal, it examines some of the key factors that could explain the prevalence of the epidemic.

HIV/AIDS is a major health and development issue in many Southern African countries. Given the escalating infection rates and its devastating impact on the social and economic well-being of the worst affected countries, how can an effective response be formulated? This paper, prepared by The Policy Project for the US Agency for International Development's Bureau for Africa, examines the impacts of HIV/AIDS and reviews various interventions for confronting the epidemic. It argues for a continued commitment to promoting interventions to bring about behavioural change to prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS.

How can the task of providing care for those affected by HIV while simultaneously expanding prevention services to the many millions that need them best be achieved? This report by the Monitoring the AIDS Pandemic (MAP) Network focuses on prevention of HIV among adults and adolescents in East, South-East and South Asia. It argues that although Asian countries have recorded widespread HIV prevention successes, many countries still need to face the facts of their own behaviour, and choose the future course of the HIV epidemics.

What is the current situation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Americas? What should be the priorities in fighting the disease? This report from MAP (Monitoring the AIDS Pandemic) was prepared for the 2nd Forum on HIV/AIDS/STD in Latin America and the Caribbean held in Cuba in April 2003. It presents information on the status and trends of the epidemic in some Caribbean and Central American countries, the Andean region and Brazil and offers a series of recommendations for future action.
